The Immigration Law Unit (ILU) in Legal Aid Society’s Civil Practice is a recognized leader in providing high-quality representation to non-citizens in all five boroughs of New York City and surrounding counties. The staff of almost 100 attorneys, social workers, and paralegals across six different projects and initiatives works collaboratively to provide client-centered, interdisciplinary, and comprehensive legal services.

About the Opportunity

The Immigration Law Unit (ILU) in the Legal Aid Society is inviting applications from eligible candidates for the position of Staff Attorney in New York.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Screen and provide legal consultations and direct representation to immigrant youth in removal proceedings. The attorney will also handle some affirmative cases.
  • Appear before Asylum Offices to represent clients
  • Appear before Family Court in all five boroughs of the City of New York and in surrounding counties, including Suffolk and Nassau, as needed, to obtain predicate orders for special immigrant juvenile status
  • Build on existing relationships with the Society’s Juvenile Rights Practice staff attorneys and others to meet the needs of undocumented youth in foster care
  • Conduct forums and workshops in immigrant communities and public schools on immigration issues
  • Provide regular training to advocates throughout the City and in Family and Immigration Courts
  • Conduct policy advocacy on behalf of clients
  • Other duties as assigned

Essential Requirements

  • Minimum of two years experience as a practicing lawyer
  • Admission to the New York State bar
  • Experience working with children preferred
  • Experience working in immigration law preferred
  • Excellent writing, analytical, oral advocacy, and organizational skills
  • Fluency in Spanish is highly desirable, and the ability to work with interpreters
  • Interest in developing new approaches to representing immigrant children with immigration issues
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively on an interdisciplinary team and handle a full caseload
  • Ability to work with pro bono attorneys, advocates, and child welfare workers

  • The salary range is $73,440 – $127,753.
