Staten Island Legal Services is seeking a full-time staff attorney to join its Family Law/Domestic Violence Unit.

Staten Island Legal Services (SILS), part of Legal Services NYC (LSNYC), fights poverty and seeks racial, social, and economic justice for low-income New Yorkers. SILS provides high-quality, innovative representation to address the pressing legal needs of Staten Island’s diverse low-income populations.

SILS focuses on the problems of clients and helps in preserving affordable and decent housing, representing survivors of domestic violence, obtaining immigration status and preventing deportations, advocating for the LGBTQ community, preventing foreclosures, advocating for students with educational needs, and obtaining public benefits.

About the Opportunity

Staten Island Legal Services is seeking a full-time staff attorney to join its Family Law/Domestic Violence Unit.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Interviewing clients, providing advice, brief services, and assessment for representation to new client intakes.
  • Advising and representing survivors of domestic violence in family law and matrimonial cases in Richmond County Family, Supreme, and Integrated Domestic Violence courts.
  • Representing Staten Island Legal Services at community events and stakeholder meetings, and working with partner community agencies, like the Staten Island Family Justice Center, to provide comprehensive services for our clients.
  • Collaborating with a social worker and paralegal on legal cases in an interdisciplinary practice model.
  • Administrative tasks, including timekeeping, file maintenance, uploading documents, data reporting, and case closing for grant compliance.

Required Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Admitted or be in the process of being admitted to practice law in the State of New York.
  • Strong interests in litigation and working directly with survivors of domestic violence.
  • Strong demonstrated background and experience in public interest and/or family law.
  • Experience working with diverse low-income communities and familiarity with structural and systemic racism and its intersection with poverty. Strong ties to or understanding of Staten Island low-income communities are a plus.
  • Commitment to social justice and working in low-income communities and communities of color to advance equity.

Preferred Skills

  • Strong interest in working directly with clients, specifically clients in crisis.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Superb analytical, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Fluency or proficiency in Spanish or another language spoken by the communities we serve is preferred. Salary determined by Collective Bargaining Agreement. Hybrid remote work policy and excellent benefits package.

Salary Range

The salary range is based on years of experience:

  • 1-10 years: $73,593 -$96,664.
  • 11-20 years: $98,875 – $116,730.
  • 21+ years: $122,117 – $133,304.
