The California Supreme Court Historical Society (CSCHS) is organising Selma Moidel Smith Law Student Writing Competition in California Legal History for submission should be till June 30.

Topics:

Original, unpublished scholarly writing on any aspect of California legal history, ranging from the Supreme Court itself, and its justices and decisions, to local events of legal historical importance —including biography, significant cases, independent state interpretation, the California Constitution, and reorganization of the court system, as well as areas of law such as criminal law, civil rights, family law, tort liability, environmental law, and taxation — in any time period from 1846 to the present.

Prizes to be awarded:

  • 1st Place: $2,500 and publication in the Society’s journal, California Legal History.
  • 2nd Place: $500, and
  • 3rd Place: $250; with possible publication in the journal.

About the Society:

The California Supreme Court Historical Society was founded in 1989 as a non-profit public benefit corporation dedicated to recovering, preserving, and promoting California’s legal and judicial history, with a particular emphasis on the State’s highest court.

The Society serves the interests of the bench and bar, the academic community, and the general public through its publications, educational programs and support of scholarly research. In addition, the Society assists with exhibitions, oral histories, court tours, and the acquisition and archiving of judicial materials.

Judges:

The entries will be judged by a panel of legal historians.

Eligibility:

The submission must be written during the student’s enrollment in a school of law.

Guidelines:

Submissions must be between 6,000 and 15,000 words, exclusive of footnotes, in 12-point type, double-spaced, with 1″ margins. To ensure anonymity, the author’s name should appear only on a separate cover page with mailing address, telephone number, email address, and name of school.

Entries should be submitted as an email attachment in electronic format (Word, WordPerfect, or PDF).
