Global Programs Fellowship

Namati’s mission is to build a robust, evidence-based global movement for legal empowerment. Rigorous analysis of case data is essential to Namati’s fulfillment of our mission: we intentionally design our direct implementation programs as innovation labs, generating cutting-edge insights while we also solve problems on the front lines.

Illustrative responsibilities of the Global Programs Fellow include:

• Assisting the CEO and Global Programs team to handle tough cases, identify and document innovation, and assess new opportunities. Recent examples include:
  • Supporting communities in rural Sierra Leone negotiating a lease agreement with a foreign palm oil company by researching potential lease provisions that would prevent and mitigate environmental harm;
  • Researching environmental justice challenges in the DMV (Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia) to help Namati scope an entry point for legal empowerment in the United States;
  • Analyzing feedback data collected through the new global client follow-up instrument.
• Supporting Namati leadership members in researching and writing publications, including academic articles, columns in the popular press, and resources for practitioners. Recent examples include:
  • The forthcoming practitioner’s guide on statutory recognition of paralegals;
  • A recently released Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) legal paper co-authored by Namati’s Sierra Leone Program Director and an FAO legal specialist analyzing the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests framework in the context of National Food Security;
  • A paper by our CEO and Right to Health Program Director on Namati’s experience with legal empowerment and the right to health in Mozambique recently accepted for publication in the Harvard Health and Human Rights Journal.
• Providing other support to the Global Programs team in line with priority projects for the organization.

Compensation & Fellowship Lengths

This is a one-year, full-time position with a start date of July/August 2018.

Please note at this time we are only able to accept applications from individuals whose fellowship will be paid for through independent fellowship funding.  While we do recognize that interested interns/fellows may approach us during the process of actively applying for external sources of funding, due to the high volume of interest in our opportunities we look for our finalists to demonstrate that they can be resourceful and creative in securing funding and will not make excessive requests of our teams for support.

Global Advocacy Fellowship

The Advocacy Fellow will play a key role in supporting Namati’s global and country-level campaigning and advocacy objectives.

Illustrative responsibilities include:

• Drafting research and policy papers for meetings and researching various government entities and engagement strategies.
• Supporting research and advocacy on financing justice services, protection, and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the roll out and promotion of an upcoming global advocacy campaign – utilizing blogs, webinars, social media, and other platforms to get the word out.
• Facilitating and coordinating online events that increase advocacy and engagement of the Global Legal Empowerment Network.
• Translating data to ensure that messaging around our reports and resources are suitable for multiple stakeholders and audiences.
• Actively researching and supporting potential engagement strategies with bilateral donors/
• Providing additional research assistance to the CEO for live programmatic or organizational questions as they arise.

Location

Washington, DC. We will consider remote working arrangements on a case by case basis.

Compensation & Fellowship Length

Namati’s fellowships are part or full-time positions requiring a minimum of 12 weeks’ commitment (we are flexible with start dates).
